Interview :

Was Bollywood always your end-goal?
I would be lying if I say that I did not want to be an actor; I always wanted to do something in Bollywood. I did television to learn acting. As a child, whenever I would watch films, I would dream of being those actors. I've always admired Shah Rukh Khan, Amitabh Bachchan and Mithun Chakraborty...

How did Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania come your way?
Karan narrated the role and told me that it was okay to say No' if I didn't like the part. He told me he wouldn't hold it against me and that I had the liberty to decline the part. I think it was really kind of him to say that.  There was no pressure on me to agree to the film. But I liked my character and the way I was going to be presented. So I went ahead and  signed the film.

Has the initial shock-of-stardom settled?

It is really overwhelming and I'm getting a good response from everywhere. I'm grateful that so much love has come my way. I hope I can make something good of it and continue with decent work in the future too.

Was your friend John Abraham responsible for recommending you?
Karan went ahead and signed me purely based on his gut-feeling. The process was very transparent. John and I were friends during our modelling days and he got busy after that. So we are not constantly in touch. But I know he is a well wisher and will always be happy for me.

Was this the first film offered to you?

Before television, there were many movies that came my way but nothing worked out eventually. I think the only reason was that I used to be a miserable actor. And that's when I realised that I really needed to work on myself. So I thought television was the best opportunity for me to learn and I would also make money because that's equally important.

How is KJo as a mentor?
Frankly speaking, he is not just a mentor but a friend too. Karan is so accessible. I can go up to him and talk about anything. In a way, he's taken me under his wings. He is always ready to hear what I have to say. The best thing that has happened to me is that I have got an opportunity to switch over to movies with his banner.

How different is television from films?

Well, movies are highly planned and you work on a bound-script. On the other hand, television is instant. TV shows run on TRPs while movies run on the content. There is a lot of detailing that goes into shooting a film. There is detailing in television too, but you just need to get done with the scenes. They're quite different!

With your Bollywood career on the horizon, are you going to give up on TV?
I don't want to speak out-of-turn, but I really don't know what I'll be doing and how things are going to pan out. I will take each day as it comes. I'm continuing with television as of now...

Will your fan-following on TV get you more eyeballs for Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania?

People know me and my work and I think it's definitely an added advantage. But there are people who are not that well-known and still manage to carry a film on their shoulders.

A lot of TV boys are shifting base to films. Who's your strongest competitor?
I don't really think of competition. I want to make a mark for myself at this point. I consider my characters to be competitors. I want to get better with each of them...
No girl would want to be in a relationship with me : Siddharth Shukla

This calm and composed actor's strength lies in his his ability to observe life keenly. Surely a charmer with his enviable looks, Siddharth Shukla rose to fame with the character of Shiv in Balika Vadhu is all excited about the release of his debut movie Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania. In town on Monday for an event, Siddharth chose to spoke to us on the way to the venue. As we reached the venue, girls were seen swooning over him. Excerpts from a chat:

You have been a frequent visitor to Gujarat. How do you like the state?

I enjoy coming to Ahmedabad. The city is really awesome and people here are warm and hospitable. They have the right spirit to enjoy festivity, they know how to enjoy life. And now that we have our prime minister from Gujarat, this state is going to be in focus even more! And about food, I make sure I have a Gujarati thaali when I am in Gujarat.

During your stint in Balika Vadhu, we have heard so many gossips — you and Shashank on cold war over the role shares, you and your co-star Toral Rasputra not on talking terms or gossip about you quitting the show due to career in movies. What's the truth?
You know what, although BV has been a great show that happened to me, I think it comes with lots of wrong 'news' put by media. I would say we all are co-stars, we come to the sets, perform our roles and the show's popularity matters! How does it matter whether we talk or not or whose role is important? We collectively are on the set to work towards the success of the show. And I guess, in showbiz, others know more about your likes than what you know of yourself!

Let's talk about Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 6, how has it changed you?

It is the best thing to have happened to me. In glam world where you are known to the audience by the character you play, Jhalak gave me identity as Siddharth Shukla! Not only that, I was not confident about dancing earlier. Even now I am not someone who will get up and start swaying to the tunes but, now I am confident about dancing to choreographed sequences. And if that's not enough, it introduced me to some wonderful persons like Karan (Johar) sir, Madhuri (Dixit) ma'am and Remo (D'souza) sir.

Talking about movies, how different was the experience?

It was amazing. It is relaxed shoot and still an intense work experience. Feels like an art work. I am all happy with the way my character has come up in Humpty Sharma... Waiting for the release of the movie.

So will daily soaps take a backstage now?

I have never decided on how to plan my career moves. So ,this is difficult to tell. I am taking up the steps in industry as per the projects I am coming across to.

Tell us about Siddharth in real life...

I observe a lot, love to travel as well. When not shooting, I love to catch up on my sleep. I am a morning person and the first task for me in the morning is to hit the gym. Also, I read newspapers and magazines as I love to keep myself informed about the happenings around me. Also what interests me is politics.

How is it that we have never got to know about your love life?
That's because I don't have any! Well, let me put it this way — I have had my share of badly managed relationships. But, no girl would want to be in a relationship with me because I have no time to devote to relationship. I am so busy with 12-14 hours of shoot — it gives me no time for anything else. And if I need someone to talk with me, I have my family staying with me so I have never felt lonely or emotionally insecure. I am happily single.
